Development Producer (Factual/Factual Entertainment)

Working to the Director, Unscripted Content Matchbox Pictures, the role must drive and oversee the Factual Entertainment development slate.

The role has the primary responsibility for:

• Seeking out interesting and innovative content ideas
• Delivering a slate of developed content that aligns with domestic (and on occasion International) broadcasters’ requirements
• Delivering a slate of developed content that aligns with the Matchbox business plan and financial and editorial objectives

The successful candidate should hold in-depth knowledge of the domestic and international market for factual and factual entertainment programming, and of changing audience tastes. They must be able to find and develop ideas with artistic and commercial potential and use their contacts and skills to recruit and attract teams of Screenwriters, Script Editors and Directors with the talent and experience to transform the initial premise into a compelling program.


• Acquire and develop stories and ideas that will make successful Factual entertainment programming
• Assess new program submissions and prepare recommendations for the Creative Director
• Build depth in the generation of developed content ensuring that Matchbox has quantity and quality programming at various stages of development across multiple broadcasters.
• Read and assess ideas, scripts and submissions, analyse their strengths and weaknesses and prepare clear development notes
• Develop and prepare pitch documents for the Matchbox Producers
• Manage the timely delivery of drafts, readership and responses from the Matchbox producers
• Prepare research materials for network presentations
• Contribute to the future direction and strategy of Matchbox Pictures


• Proven experience of developing original content, with a particular emphasis on the factual entertainment genre
• A creative individual with a particular aptitude for finding new projects and discovering new talent. Must possess creativity, ideas and enthusiasm to be successful in the role
• Demonstrated success in working with ideas and concepts
• Must be able to write compelling pitch documents that make an idea inspire
• Should be a keen cultural observer with a thorough understanding of the television market, and knowledge of current audience tastes and future trends
• Experience of working with a range of broadcasters across the development and/or production process
• Developed contacts, networks and knowledge of local and international production community
• Must be prepared to pitch program ideas both internally and externally
